Portugal's 873th Birthday

On this day, October 5 in 1143, the Treaty of Zamora was signed, between the founding father of our glorious nation, King Afonso Henriques (or Afonso I) and his cousin, Afonso VII of Léon and Castille (I think this one was acknowledged as Emperor of Hispania or something). On this day also, in 1910 the Monarchy fell and the Republic was founded (sad day tbh).

Portugal's one of the oldest unified country in Europe, along with England and perhaps the Scandinavian Kingdoms.

Portugal has the oldest borders in Europe and one of, if not the country with the oldest borders (untouched) in the world. We've had the same borders since the end of reconquista (current border was assured in the Treaty of Alcanizes of 1297) in a vast majority untouched, with the exception of the illegal occupation of Olivenza by the Spanish.

Portugal ceded it to Spain, the dispute is wether they took it back or not. In any case Olivenza changed hands.

Under the Treaty of Vienna of 1815 Spain acknowledged our ownership over it and spain promised to hand it over asap
